That means that she is getting more comfortable as a retired hound and is becoming more curious. That is a good sign and is perfectly normal. She will grow out of that after a few weeks and realize that her dog toys are better than other things. She has learned a lot about being a retired hound, and seems to like it a lot. She has learned the daily routine and is no trouble to have around the house. She still isn't fully housetrained yet, but we are working on that. It usually takes a little time with a dog so young. The very young ones can be a little stubborn at first, but they eventually get the idea. It is all part of the learning process. Natalie is a good one and some family is going to be very lucky to get her. We also learned yesterday that she smiles. She got a little excited and flashed a smile at us. We broke out laughing when she did that. She has quite a fun personality on her and is a lot of fun to play with. If you would like to meet Natty Boh, please contact Denise Davis at Greyhound Rescue.

Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-57532467222458670512011-07-12T16:43:00.000-07:002011-07-12T16:54:10.498-07:00Natalie is learning the ropes

Natalie has been at the Hound Hotel for 4 days now and has learned a great deal. She has mastered the stairs and knows the daily routine already. She goes straight to her food bowl and eats all her food at mealtime. She likes to play in the yard and hang out on a soft doggie bed with the family in the evenings. Natalie is surprisingly calm for a dog as young as she is. We expect that they will be a little wild at first at that age straight off the track, but she has been very well behaved. That is not to say that she doesn't have any spunk to her, because she does. As she matures and gets more comfortable in her foster home, her personality will continue to come out. She is going to turn out to be a good one. She'll be great for walks and runs at the dog park, and she will be a terrific companion. We can't say for sure if she is cat safe. It is a little tough to determine that with her being so young and new to her situation. She does seem calm enough that with the proper training, she would probably be ok with a cat, but you never really know until the dog is around a real cat. She doesn't bother our parrot, which is a good sign though. If you would like to meet Natalie, please contact Denise Davis.

Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-29238958882595705742011-07-09T14:55:00.001-07:002011-07-09T15:03:34.283-07:00Welcome Natalie!

Natalie, or as we have already nicknamed her, Natty Boh, has arrived at the Hound Hotel. Natalie is a young one, having been born on July 1st, just two years ago. She is also a little one. She could almost fit in your pocket. She is a really friendly little girl that is already wagging her tail all the time. She is a very dark brindle, one of the most beautiful we have seen for a long time. We think she is going to be a really good dog. She has all the makings of a superstar dog. Being so young, she will need a little guidance, but other than that, she is good to go. We can't say too much about her now, as we just picked her up today, however we will provide updates on her in the coming days. For now, just enjoy her pictures. The pictures were taken when she laid down in a home for the very first time.

Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-36167212735972866472011-07-05T16:22:00.000-07:002011-07-05T16:26:38.354-07:00Patty Ann-Adopted!

Patty Ann found her forever home this weekend. She gets an A for her behavior so far. Patty is a superb greyhound. She is friendly, respectful, beautifully behaved, and such a pleasure to have around the house. We haven't had a track dog this easy for a while. She has been a little reserved for the first week, but is now integrating herself into the family. She loves people and loves pets, but has been a little nervous up until today. That is normal. She is now getting used to the idea of being in a home and is learning to enjoy all the benefits of that. She has spent plenty of time this evening sniffing the grass and just being with the family on the deck. She seems to like it a lot.
If you are a potential first time greyhound owner reading this blog, then you should consider looking at Patty Ann. Your first greyhound is always the toughest, as they have no hound role model. The secret to the Hound Hotel is that we have the resident greyhounds, and they most of the work for us. They teach the newbie what to do and when to do it. Patty has it all down already, and she didn't need much training anyway. She is a good one.
I'll let you in on another little greyhound secret too. Greyhounds are pretty big dogs and most people don't know much about them. They are very athletic and muscular, and look like they could tear people apart. You may walk down the street, as we have, and people cross to the other side of the street. People don't know that they are the friendliest dogs around. That isn't always a bad thing. You can take a nice walk with your dog and nobody will bother you.
Patty is an A+ dog, and she will make a great addition to any home. If you would like to meet Patty, please contact Denise Davis.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-37843592672673931222011-06-21T17:10:00.000-07:002011-06-21T17:16:19.051-07:00Patty Ann learns the stairs

Patty Ann has been at the Hound Hotel for three days now and she is doing a great job as a foster dog. It took her all of 15 minutes of stair training to learn the stairs. Two trips up and two trips down is all that it took. Then she was off on her own up and down the stairs. Patty has had no accidents in the house and we have been giving her full run of the house while we have been gone. No problems at all. She a superbly behaved greyhound. She would be a terrific first greyhound for someone or a terrific addition to any family's greyhound pack. We aren't sure if she is small animal safe yet. She has a little bit of an alpha streak that will probably come out a little more with time, but we don't anticipate any issues with her. She is a good one. Patty hails from the Sunshine State where she did her racing, and has now made the trip up the coast to the Free State of Maryland. There are some dogs that you know you are really going to like as soon as you meet them. Patty Ann is one of those dogs. She is a really friendly, confident, and outgoing greyhound. She is three years old so she is done with her puppy days, and has matured to the point that she is friendly and energetic but not hyperactive at all. She is very well behaved and is getting along very well with the resident hounds. She is eating very well and already knows which food bowl is hers. She should be a very pleasant greyhound to have around the house. We didn't bother crating her last night as we didn't think she would need that. She slept in our room next to the resident hounds and didn't make a sound all night. We will be doing a little stair training today but other than that, she is ready for her future family any time. If you would like to meet Patty Ann, please contact Denise Davis.

Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-2585800223290555802011-03-21T16:11:00.000-07:002011-03-21T16:14:35.364-07:00Nessa-Adopted!!!Nessa has found her forever home. It is a little hard to believe that she hasn't been snapped up yet. Nessa is as good as a greyhound gets. She is a beautiful dog, perfectly behaved, and friendly as all get out. She has plenty of pep to her but she also knows how to relax. She is an all purpose hound that will make her future family wonder how they ever lived without her. No, she isn't two years old. So what? Nessa deserves a family just as much as any other hound, and she will earn her place in her future home. Need someone to sleep next to your bed with one eye open? Nessa fits the bill. Need someone to keep watch over your house while you are away? Nessa fits that bill too. Need someone to hang out with you while you watch TV? Nessa is perfect for that. Need someone to get you motivated to get off the couch and go for a walk? Nessa is your ticket. The weather is getting warmer so we plan on having some fun with her in the yard this week. We'll get out the stopwatch and get some lap times on her as she runs the backyard racetrack. If you get her very excited, she will roo. I learned this when I had all the hounds around me and I was petting them all, getting them a little excited. She suddenly put her head back and began to roo. It was hilarious. Our dogs don't do that, so it was really funny to see her do that. Nessa has been here for a week now and she is doing great. She is an A+ dog. She is perfectly behaved, and we are having no issues at all with her. She just turned seven, but she has plenty of spunk left in her. She would like nothing better than to go on brisk walks and play in yard with her future family. She has learned our family routine quickly and seem just like one of the resident hounds already. She would do the same at your house. Would you like a perfect dog to join your family? Please call Denise Davis and schedule a meeting with Nessa. Above is a photo of Nessa just hanging out with the family.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-49058436982187559052011-01-31T17:25:00.000-08:002011-01-31T17:48:06.174-08:00Nessa settles in

Nessa has been hanging out at the Hound Hotel for a couple of days now and pretty much has the daily routine down. It took her all of one day to master the stairs, and now she goes up and down them like an old pro. She is a superbly behaved hound and she has the full run of the house already. She doesn't need a crate and she always wants to be near the family. She is a very loyal companion who will be a welcome addition to any family, providing you don't have small animals. When she came here, we were told that she had been a great racer at the track. I looked up her record, and she sure was. She was quite the pro athlete in her day. Nessa and I spent the evening last night spinning stories of our former athletic greatness. She told me about the time she came up on the inside rail, kicking dirt in the boy's faces, laughing her way to victory. I told her about the time I sank the three-pointer at the final buzzer to win the state championship. Okay, okay, I never sank a three-pointer at the buzzer, but I guy can dream can't he? Shaq or Peyton Manning probably won't be hanging out at your house, but Nessa is one pro athlete who would be happy to hang out with you every day. That freed up a spot at the Hound Hotel and our newest foster dog, Nessa, has arrived. Nessa is a seven year old female that has been returned to us due to no fault of her own. Her previous home had two cats and a small dog, and Nessa isn't small animal safe. They tried to make it work for a very long time because Nessa is such a good hound, but finally had to bring her back. She is completely housetrained and used to living in a home. She didn't know how to do the stairs when she came here yesterday, but has already learned how to go up the stairs by herself, and down the stairs with just a little help. I suspect that by later today the stairs will no longer be a problem at all for her. She is a very affectionate girl who wags her tail all the time. She slept quietly through the night last night in our room with us and the resident hounds. I don't think we will have any trouble with her at all. If you would like to meet Nessa, please contact Denise Davis at Greyhound Rescue Inc.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-71380914654708930622010-12-10T10:58:00.001-08:002010-12-10T11:13:51.186-08:00What do we call this dog?

Mcbride? McNugget? McGriddle? McBrindle? I really don't know what to call this dog, officially named McBride. She is a little on the small side so McNugget fits her, but she is also a beautiful brindle dog, so McBrindle also works. Either way, this is turning out to be a fun fostering experience. McGriddle taught herself the stairs on her first full day here and she has acclimated as if she were a resident hound. McNugget sleeps with the family in our room at night and knows the morning routine....alarm goes off, jumps on foster dad, runs downstairs, chows down her breakfast, goes outside to do her business, comes inside and back to sleep. Good dog. She has the run of the house and we don't worry about her...with the small exception of the library book that she ate when she got her muzzle off while we were out. I guess the dog really did eat our homework. How did that happen? Beats me. She is a smart one. McBrindle is a very friendly, confident, relaxed for her age hound and she is a welcome guest at the Hound Hotel. She will make a terrific addition to someone's family. Would you like to have a McNugget in your home? Please contact Denise Davis if you would like to meet McBrindle.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-65279730596656072462010-12-05T16:25:00.000-08:002010-12-05T16:35:08.139-08:00McBride has arrived!

Our newest foster greyhound, McBride, arrived today. We have spent the afternoon with her and are very impressed with her. She passed her first two foster tests with flying colors...drinking water and eating. Fosters are often stressed and we have to be careful to make sure they are getting water. That has been no problem for McBride. She found the water bowl right away and has been drinking steadily all afternoon. Next is food. New fosters are often too stressed to eat well. Again not a problem for McBride. She ate her dinner like a horse. That says a lot about her. She is a confident, well adjusted greyhound that is acclimating to her new environment very well. She is very friendly and curious and she wants to check everything out. She has already counter surfed a couple of times, as any good greyhound will do! She is a good one and we will post updates as we learn more about her. As for now, I think I will hang out with her as she is sacked out on her doggie bed. If you would like to meet McBride, please contact Denise Davis.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-9199514690563377552010-11-01T17:02:00.001-07:002010-11-01T17:04:54.925-07:00Honey Cone-Adopted!!!Saturday turned out to be a great day at the Hound Hotel. A very nice couple came to meet Honey and took her right away. Honey did a great job of showing her new family what a great dog she is. Honey is going to get plenty of walks, a fenced area to run in, and plenty of attention from her new family. We couldn't be happier for her. If Honey ever needs a place to rest her paws, she is always welcome at the Hound Hotel. Honey is acclimating so well to her foster home and is exceeding our expectations. The fact that she is four years old has a lot to do with that. She is a little more mature than your typical track dog, which makes the transition a lot easier. She taught herself to go up and down the stairs today, and is now following us all around the house. We have removed the barriers blocking much of the house, giving her complete access to the whole Hound Hotel. She isn't the destructive type, so we feel confident letting her walk around when she wants to. Having said that, she sticks to us like glue most of the time and can be found laying by our side most of time. She is also a very affectionate hound and likes her pets a lot, but knows when enough is enough. Honey is a very well balanced hound and she will be a terrific addition to someone's family. She is definitely worth a serious look if you are in the market for a greyhound. Please contact Denise Davis is you would like to meet her.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-28641310864971155242010-10-24T14:10:00.000-07:002010-10-24T14:23:45.029-07:00UMR Honey Cone

First, we should apologize for not updating the progress on our previous foster dog, Wasp. She got adopted at the annual picnic and is living happily ever after. We had gotten a little lax about updating the blog, but we will try to do better.

UMR Honey Cone arrived today at the Hound Hotel. We have been in the fostering business for a long time now, and have developed an intuition as to how the foster dogs will work out. Honey Cone is going to rank towards the top of the foster list. She is a four year old female that is pretty calm, very friendly, and very well balanced. She has some maturity to her so there is no puppy left in her. She isn't inclined to chew anything or destroy anything. She came in, checked out the house, and then took a spot on a doggie bed and took a nap. She ate all her food and has been drinking from the water bowl, and is showing very few signs of stress. That is terrific for a dog that has only been here for a few hours. We are already getting some tail wags out of her and she seems to be a very affectionate hound. She is a terrific, low maintenence hound that will be a terrific companion for her future family. She seems to have the right balance of energy and mellowness. She will love to go for walks and meet all the neighbors, but she isn't a wild child at all. She will allow her future family to experience the joy of having a greyhound right away with a very short transition period. She would make a great dog for a first time greyhound owner. Wasp is making very good progress and is learning all about being a retired greyhound. She is a happy dog, that's for sure. When she gets attention, she shakes and quivers and wags her tail like no dog I have seen before. She gets so excited to see her foster mom and dad that she just about jumps out of her skin. Is she a shy dog? Nope, not in the least. She actually has an alpha personality to her, and even though she is a little dog, she won't be bossed around by any other dog. She eats like a horse as well, so her future family won't be having any food issues with her. Her only issue now is that she is prone to getting happy tail from whipping her tail around in fits of happiness. We haven't crated her because of that, but she still smacked her tail against the wall and opened up a boo boo on the end of her tail. We have her tail wrapped up with plenty of padding now to let it heal. In short order, she will be fine. She will be sporting a nice bandage on her tail at the picnic this weekend, so please let her know how nice it looks on her when you see her! It is quite a sylish look, so Lady Gaga, eat your heart out! If you would like to meet Wasp, please contact Denise Davis.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-83394824200058675412010-09-12T07:54:00.000-07:002010-09-12T08:13:34.246-07:00SE's Wasp

We don't normally welcome wasps at the Hound Hotel, but this wasp is a little different. SE's Wasp arrived yesterday after a long day of traveling from the track in Florida, and then a short overnight stay at the rescue kennel. We drove to the secret greyhound rendezvous point yesterday and picked her up. She slept the whole way home in the car, which is terrific. Like any dog right off the track, she doesn't know the ropes of residential life, but she is a smart one and she will learn quickly. She is not shy at all, and she wags her tail a mile a minute. We may have to register her tail as a lethal weapon! She seems to be a very playful hound with enough pep in her to keep life around the house interesting. We have had her for less than a day so we can't report too much about her yet. We will continue to post updates as we learn more about her. Wasp did hear that there will be the annual GRI picnic next weekend and she can't wait to go. The picnic will be like her debutante ball! We hope to see everyone there, and maybe Wasp can find her new family there too!

Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-68182058872123616082010-07-26T17:00:00.001-07:002010-07-26T17:05:31.092-07:00Tater-Adopted!!

Our little Tater Tot has been adopted. She has headed down to Capitol Hill and is now Rudy's sister (see previous posts). Rudy's parents mentioned that they were in the market for a female, and Tater was just the ticket for them. Apparently Tater is very good at fetching a tennis ball, and she loves to destroy toys in record time. Toys aren't meant to last forever, but she will have to learn to let them last at least 10 minutes. We wish Tater and her family all the best. Happy trails Tater! If Tater ever needs a place to rest her paws, the Hound Hotel will always leave a light on for her.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6648075230033429177.post-60344440290653003062010-07-12T17:43:00.000-07:002010-07-12T17:51:14.986-07:00Tater is a fun little tot

Tater has been at the Hound Hotel for two days now, and she is settling in very well to retired life. Even though she is very young, having just turned two a week ago, she is very well behaved. We had expected that she would be a handful with her being so young, but she isn't. They usually have a lot of energy at that age, and take a few weeks to settle down, but Tater is mature beyond her years. While she is very playful and she loves to run, she is not a wild one by any means. Once she gets her morning run in, she settles down and sleeps just like any other greyhound. We also aren't bothering to crate her because she really doesn't need a crate. She sleeps in the bedroom with us and the resident hounds, and doesn't bother anyone. She is turning out to be a terrific foster dog, and we are really impressed with her. If you would like to meet Tater, please contact Denise Davis.
Stowe and Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17542132014682193632noreply@blogger.com0
